Are people truly responsible for their actions or are we predestined for an inevitable sequence of events in our lives? This question has puzzled humanity throughout history. The word “faith,” implies hope, loyalty, and a belief system which has no proof. “Fate,” on the other hand, implies resignation — a belief that things are predestined before time existed, and that this simply falls into one’s destiny.
Invariably, a belief in a higher power complicates this discussion as some folks believe their God has a plan for them so “not to worry”: fate will always prevail to make things right. Yet to others, they understand that the consequences of their actions may have brought them to a difficult point in life but they cling to the hope that ultimately things will be OK. Faith in this sense is an underlying feeling that good will prevail.
Interestingly, even in despair, there is always a pervasive sense of hope underlying every song…Thy Will is an open letter to God where Hillary asks God for a sign and explanation that He has a plan for her despite her troubles and pain regarding dealing with her grandfather's battle with cancer. This is an incredibly beautiful song and one of my all time favorites. It’s a story of someone who endures and ultimately triumphs over the hardships of the world around him. It could be Jesus, it could be you, someone you know or simply anyone who's spirit transcends the banality of the daily grind. Who was Jimmie Spheeris?
