I remember you
You're the one who made my dreams come true
A few kisses ago.
I remember you
You're the one who said "I love you too.
It's true... Didn't you know?"
I remember too
A distant bell
And stars that fell
Like rain out of the blue.
When my life is through
And the angels ask me to recall
The thrill of them all
I shall tell them...
I remember you.
I Remember You was a popular song, published in 1941. The music was written by Victor Schertzinger, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was one of several introduced in the film The Fleet's In (1942). It was sung in the film by Dorothy Lamour (with harmony by Bob Eberly and Helen O'Connell and featuring the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra). It has since been covered most notably by Frank Ifield, Glen Campbell and Björk.
In 1941, Mercer began an affair with 19-year-old Judy Garland, while she was engaged to composer David Rose. Garland ended her involvement when she married Rose. In later years, Garland and Mercer rekindled their affair. Mercer stated that his song I Remember You was the most direct expression of his feelings for Garland.
For a change, I decided to sing the tune after the bone version and the pixie/plunger muted bone solo.
